Student Defense Statement on the Trump Administration’s Latest Efforts to Dismantle ED By Moving Its Offices To Other Federal Departments

Student Defense President Aaron Ament issued a statement today on reports that the Trump Administration’s continued efforts to dismantle ED by moving its offices to other federal departments:

“No number of announcements or proclamations will make unilaterally dismantling the Department of Education legal — or a good idea. At a time when Americans are struggling with rising costs and unaffordable bills, this half-baked plan will put higher education further out of reach for American families.

“I’m glad to see that the administration—at least for now—appears to be backing off its disastrous scheme to move Federal Student Aid to the Small Business Administration after we threatened to sue. But they have made clear from day one that they are hellbent on tearing down the Department of Education no matter how many students and families it hurts.

“Make no mistake: only Congress has the power to create or shutter federal agencies. We will continue to fight this misguided power grab in court.”
