UPDATE: Student Association Seeks Temporary Restraining Order in Lawsuit to Prevent Illegal DOGE Access to Department of Education Data

UPDATE: Students Seek Temporary Restraining Order in Lawsuit to Prevent Illegal DOGE Access to Department of Education Data

Today, in their pending litigation on behalf of the University of California Student Association, Student Defense and Public Citizen Litigation Group filed an emergency motion for a temporary restraining order (TRO) to immediately prevent the Department of Education from sharing access to sensitive student data with the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

“The Department of Education has data on everything from students’ income levels and educational outcomes to their banking information and Social Security numbers. There’s no putting the toothpaste back in the tube once that data gets into the wrong hands,” said Student Defense Vice President Dan Zibel. “Millions of Americans need the Court to act quickly to protect them from irreparable harm.”

"Over the last few days, we've learned more and more troubling information about the scope of DOGE's access to sensitive personal information, and how DOGE is feeding that information into untested, unsecure systems,” said Public Citizen Litigation Group attorney Adam Pulver.  “A court order is necessary to protect the privacy and security of the millions of Americans who trusted the Department of Education with their data."
