Student Defense Statement on Supreme Court Student Debt Relief Decision

The Supreme Court struck down President Biden’s widespread student debt relief plan. In response, Student Defense President Aaron Ament issued the following statement:

“Too many Americans are trapped under an avalanche of student debt. Today’s ruling denies millions of them a badly-needed lifeline, but it doesn’t prevent—or diminish the need for—big structural changes to stop the pileup. 

“Year after year the cost of college increases, and more students take on loans—too often for a degree that will never pay for itself. Ultimately, to end the student loan crisis we need to ensure students don’t rack up unaffordable debt in the first place. 

“As the nation prepares to restart the behemoth student loan repayment system, Congress and the Administration should do everything possible to protect student loan borrowers and create lasting solutions for the next generation of students.”
