Student Defense Statement on Donald Trump’s Executive Order to Eliminate the Department of Education

Student Defense President Aaron Ament issued a statement today in response to the Trump Administration’s reported Executive Order aimed at eliminating the Department of Education:

“Let’s be clear: there’s no Executive Order the President can sign to legally eliminate the Department of Education. Linda McMahon acknowledged that herself. The real effect of this decree will just be even more hardship and confusion for students and families. 

“This executive order won’t do anything to improve the lives of students or student loan borrowers. And the notion that the Department can be summarily closed or functionally decimated while maintaining ‘uninterrupted delivery of services, programs and benefits on which Americans rely’—as the order reportedly directs—is a pipe dream. 

“We’re already preparing to stop the dismantling of the Department of Education in court.”
