Student Defense Statement on President Trump’s Executive Order to Discourage States from Regulating Artificial Intelligence

Student Defense Vice President and Chief Counsel Dan Zibel issued a statement today on President Trump’s Executive Order aimed to stopping states from combatting the risks associated with Artificial Intelligence:

“AI has tremendous potential, but it also raises serious concerns. As with any new technology, government entities have a responsibility to ensure that it is deployed in a way that benefits society and protects vulnerable populations. States play an important role in creating guardrails and guiding the impact that this fast-developing technology will have on all industries, including higher education.

“Our new Safeguarding Higher-Ed Through AI Practices & Ethics (SHAPE) AI Initiative was created to ensure higher education institutions are prioritizing student protections while developing AI policies, and we plan to continue this important work.

“AI is only growing its influence and power in society. This executive order will make it more challenging to protect students and consumers.”
